If business-related goals are either global or very long term, it can be difficult to maintain our focus. Such goals may appear to be remote or of a scale that seems almost impossible to achieve. Outcomes are less complex than goals, shorter term and easily achievable. They define the route, and even some optional routes, to the goal. They enable the individual to define their own objectives, aligned to the goal. The more outcomes that are planned, the more flexibility is created and the more opportunities there are to move towards achieving the eventual goal.

Participants bring to the session a previously defined long-term goal. Working with a partner, they apply the well-formed outcome questionnaire to the goal so that a more complete perspective is gained. They may find that the definition of the goal changes as a result of this exercise. Working in the same pairs, participants then coach each other through the ‘Back to the future’ exercise, in which the route backwards from the goal is plotted in terms of outcomes. Wherever an outcome is dependent upon an interaction with someone else, the participant must imagine that they are in the other person’s shoes, define that person’s outcome and work out how the two outcomes can be dovetailed together.
