The true cost of absence is not just about the direct costs of paying staff who are not at work, but must also include all the hidden, indirect costs incurred. This training activity encourages participants to think about the total cost of absence to their organisations.

You begin this training activity by asking the participants to work in groups to calculate the cost of absence to their organisations. You then take feedback from the groups and summarise the exercise, clarifying all the direct and indirect costs involved. The participants then review their own figures against a template that is provided, to calculate the cost of absence to their organisation or part of the organisation they are responsible for. Finally, you lead a brief summary, listing the participants’ key learning points and giving them an opportunity to ask questions.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to help participants calculate the cost of absence in their organisations and to encourage them to commit to improve attendance for the benefit of all.
