Poor performance is a continual problem for many managers and disciplinary action is frequently started to try to remedy the problem. This training activity helps managers to think about action to prevent disciplinary action in the case of poor performance. If disciplinary action is started then employees usually have the right to appeal at every stage. It is important that procedures are in place for appeals as well as for disciplinary cases.

A ‘milling around’ exercise starts the training activity, introducing participants to each other and encouraging them to use questions to start to gather information, store it and then pass it on. You then give the purpose for the training activity before briefly discussing with the group the causes and possible remedies for poor performance. Question types are revised or introduced and then small groups use a case study to develop possible questions to help with performance management. Different groups use the second part of this case study to draw out procedures and practice for appeals. Participants end the training activity by completing a learning log which uses the learning cycle to help them make their learning more explicit.
