When trying anything new, we start with preconceptions of how it will turn out. We are often inclined to focus on what could go wrong and the possible implications rather than what will be successful. By using positive mental rehearsal, the participants focus on the beneficial outcomes of any networking action and, as a result, are much more likely to achieve a positive result.
The training activity begins with an examination of success and failure as self-fulfilling prophecies. The participants consider their negative self-talk and how visualisation can help them achieve more. They next discover their own blocks to success by looking into their past history and how to release negative statements. Now with raised awareness, the participants prepare a script for a networking action, with their desired outcome as the objective. They go on to reinforce their belief in the outcome through visualisation. In the final exercise they write a letter addressed to themselves describing the success they have achieved. This is posted to them two months later.
