Preparing for you learning needs analysis interview

The learning needs analysis (LNA) interview provides the interviewee and their line manager and/or training officer with an opportunity to examine development needs and decide on the most effective forms of development. The time spent in discussion benefits both the individual and the organisation in terms of development and motivation. Time constraints will normally limit the actual interview time to half an hour or so, and preparation is essential if optimum use is to be made of the dedicated interview time. This training activity encourages participants to gather and analyse relevant documents beforehand in order to identify useful discussion topics.

You open this training activity by explaining that preparation time directly affects the quality of the LNA interview. You run a brainstorm to generate ideas on the type of information that could usefully be examined as part of the preparation and then the participants gather together as much of that information as possible for use during the remainder of the exercise. The participants then work individually to analyse the information to identify potential development areas they would like to discuss during the LNA interview. They feed back on selected areas of their work. You close by taking key learning points from the participants before distributing a key learning points handout.
