This activity introduces participants to an interview process based on competencies. It demonstrates how information obtained from application forms can be used to determind an applicant's competency level, and as a basis for preparing interview questions.
The activity begins by pointing out to the participants the main differences between a typical recruitment interview and a competency-based one. The participants then have to decide at which competency level they would rate a mock application for. They prepare the interview questions they would ask the candidate, based on the information found on the mock application form. They then repeat this assessment for the other three competencies for three other application forms. A feedback discussion allows comparison of decisions and exchange of possible question to probe further into certain areas of a candidate's application. Finally, the participants examine the advantages and disadvantages of using a competency-based process when preparing for interviews. The activity closes with a review of the key learning points covered and a reminder to recruiters to prepare carefully before conducting a competency-based interview.
