As part of ‘making it happen’, it is important for people to give careful thought to the way they present themselves, both on paper and face-to-face. This training activity provides guidance for the two situations in which this usually happens – through a written curriculum vitae (increasingly called a resume, even in the UK) and in an interview.

After a brief introduction to the training activity, the participants look at the purpose of a CV. Then they consider a CV template that can be tailored to suit individual requirements. Next, participants draft their own CVs and look into the options for presenting themselves other than through a CV. This is followed by an examination of how to prepare for an interview and the factors that make a successful interview. The final exercise provides participants with interview practice. The training activity closes by emphasising the importance of that vital first impression at interview.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to provide the participants with guidelines for presenting themselves in written and face-to-face communication, and show some practice in doing so.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers with participants as part of a career development programme, where they have done some self-analysis and planning, and are moving on to making it happen. Alternatively, it could be used in more general self-development situations, perhaps where an organisation is seeking to increase the use of development options not involving attendance on training courses. This training activity does not cover techniques extensively, but would be useful to participants either as an overview or as an introduction to a targeted interview programme.
