There are often several solutions to a given problem. Teams must remain flexible and open if they are to achieve their tasks in the most effective way. In this training activity, the team works together to achieve a given objective but it is up to them how they go about it. They must use their abilities of lateral thinking to resolve the problem and then consider their application of this to the workplace.

You briefly explain that the purpose of this training activity is to solve a problem as a team. You take the team to the activity area and tell them that they are to invent a measuring device from the materials provided in a given time. The task will test their powers of lateral thinking as there is no obvious solution! After a debriefing session, the participants consider the use of lateral thinking methods in their team working.
