Managers seeking to manage disciplinary and grievance issues are often faced with complex problems and difficult decisions. The use of a process for problem solving and decision making will ensure that managers are enabled to make effective decisions. The ability to think ‘outside the box’, to think creatively, will help managers to identify the optimum way forward.

Following a brief introduction, participants work in small groups on a problem-solving exercise and identify a process for solving problems and making decisions, to help their management of grievance and disciplinary issues. The training activity continues with two brief, fun exercises on creative thinking, followed by further work on processes for encouraging creative thinking. Participants continue work, in small groups, on the problem-solving exercise started earlier in the training activity, making decisions about the way forward in a difficult situation. The training activity ends with participants completing a learning log, to encourage transfer of learning to disciplinary processes.
