This training activity will help participants to resolve their staff’s personal and professional problems that affect their work.
The training activity opens with a trainer-led discussion on the central part that problem solving has in helping a manager achieve their objectives. The session focuses on how personal, rather than technical, problems can reduce the effectiveness of their staff and section. You now discuss the links between problem solving and leadership style. This reinforces the effectiveness of joint problem solving which lies at the core of the democratic style. You then introduce them to the attitudes, skills, and a suggested structure which the participants can use to ensure that they make best use of the joint problem-solving approach. The participants take part in an exercise that is designed to develop the approach by practising the skills involved in a problem-solving discussion. The training activity concludes with a plenary review of the exercise, following which, participants are invited to make plans to transfer their learning back to the workplace.

Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers with all staff who are involved in a management or supervisor skills development programme where there is a need to develop communication and problem-solving skills. It is equally applicable as part of any learning event developing participants’ skills in interviews which have a problem-solving focus, for example, counselling, discipline, grievance, performance appraisal, and so on. This training activity requires an understanding of the core skills of questioning, body language and active listening, and will be more effective if participants have completed ‘Face-to-face communication skills’. The approach outlined is compatible with the democratic style of leadership covered in ‘Leadership’. If participants have previously covered this material it will also enhance their understanding of the topic in this activity.
