A key element in understanding myself is to be explicitly aware of the technical and professional know-how we make available to our organisations. Often the competency/capability models used by organisations concentrate on the personal and interpersonal aspects. In reality, technical and professional know-how is just as important when selection or promotion decisions are made. This training activity provides a framework within which participants can document their current ‘know-how profile’.

After a brief introduction by the trainer, participants discuss the components of technical and professional know-how, and establish a model for the remainder of the training activity. Then they reflect on their own bank of technical and professional know-how, and work in groups to make the list as comprehensive as possible. The final exercise asks the participants to think about and record possible ways to make even better use of their know-how in their current job and in any future job.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to provide the participants with a framework to analyse their knowledge, skills and expertise. They produce their personal profile within this context, perhaps for input to later planning activities.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers as part of a career development workshop, either attended within an organisation or as an open programme. It can successfully be combined with activities covering the other elements of capability, particularly ‘Values, attitudes and motivation’ and ‘Behavioural profiles’. It may also be useful as a follow-up activity after the more general skills analysis in ‘Understanding my skills’, and will certainly be effective in organisational or personal situations where technical and professional know-how is particularly valued.
