Questions are a valuable tool for managing discipline and grievance. It takes practice to ask the right sort of questions to get to the truth or the bottom of what has happened and to start investigating problems. Questioning without listening becomes an interrogation; both questioning and listening skills have to be used to manage discipline effectively. Shared problem solving also has to include being open to being questioned by others.
You use a fun introductory exercise to help participants to start thinking about how questions are used and to help to build trust. Small groups then use a structured exercise to explore the use of questions to help investigations and problem solving. Your can repeat this small group exercise to give further practice. If you do, then you use a short energiser exercise before participants return to their small groups to repeat the exercise. The training activity ends with participants completing a learning log to help them recognise how they can use questions in the future and be proactive about putting their learning into practice.
