Negotiators are sometimes perplexed when all their hard-fought agreements seem to come to nothing, or worse still, actually cause more conflict. Sometimes, people are so amazed when agreement is reached that the meeting is concluded all too swiftly. Both sides are so delighted to be able to shake hands, or sign the deal, that they seem to bathe in the exhilaration of the acceptance. However, all too often the consequences of their agreement are left unrecorded, ill considered and mismanaged. It is often tempting, after striking a deal, to want to leave immediately in case the other side change their minds. This can sometimes result in misunderstanding, misapprehension and mistakes. Implementing the agreement is just as important as every other phase of negotiations. This training activity demonstrates how important it is to keep track of what is said and agreed in a negotiation in the form of an action plan for implementation.
The participants discuss the importance of keeping a written record of events during a negotiation. They identify advantages and share tips on note-taking. The participants then look at the importance of recording agreements and discuss the elements of a good action plan. They then try out their note-taking and action-planning skills in a negotiations exercise.
