Having put all your short-listed candidates through the selection process, you then need to make the difficult decision about who should be offered the job. It can be tempting to make a snap decision, based on little more than hazy memories of the interviews you carried out, often many days ago. Unfortunately, snap decisions most often result in less than ideal selections. As with any other stage in the recruitment and retention process, they key to success at this stage, is to use an objective process to aid decision making. This training activity looks at how to use a structured process for identifying the best candidate for the job, and introduces participants to the candidate assessment form, the main tool used in this process.

You introduce the training activity by explaining to participants the need to be objective when choosing the best candidate for a job. You should remind them of the importance of the job description and person specification as tools in the selection process. (For participants who haven’t yet covered ‘What kind of person do we need?’ you explain what a job description and person specification are using example from the training activity if required.) Next, you introduce participants to the candidate assessment process and explain this five-stop process for assessing candidates who have been interviewed, or have taken part in other selection activities. You then discuss the form in general before going through each part of it in detail. You go on to discuss with participants any changes which would make the form more suitable for use in their organisation. You bring the training activity to a close by summarising the key learning points it has covered.
