It is the responsibility of all employers to ensure that their recruitment and selection processes do not discriminate against anyone on the grounds of gender, race or disability. While recruiters don’t need to know every detail of the relevant employment acts, they do need to have a basic understanding of the main features of the laws. This training activity takes participants through the relevant anti-discrimination legislation and looks at its implications for job advertisements.
You introduce the training activity by explaining that it is an employer’s responsibility not to be discriminatory in the recruitment process. You then ask participants to identify the types of discrimination which are unlawful in this country. You then take participants through the main points of the Sex Discrimination Acts (1975 and 1986), the Race Relations Act (1976) and the Disability Discrimination Act (1995). Next, you explain points to remember when putting together a fair job advertisement, before going on to give participants a chance to review a fictitious job advertisement in the light of anti-discrimination legislation covered in this training resource. You conclude the training activity by reiterating the key learning points covered in it.
