Having selected employees for redundancy, participants then have to break the news in a redundancy counselling session. Some employees will welcome the news, particularly if there is an attractive redundancy package on offer, and will even volunteer to go. However, for many employees redundancy can be devastating. An effective counselling discussion is a means of breaking the news, whilst helping the employee to look, as positively as possible, to the future.

This training activity enlarges upon the scenario in ‘Making workers redundant’. It is designed to enable participants to plan for, and carry out, a redundancy counselling discussion. ‘Counselling skills’ can also be used with this training activity.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers acting as facilitators, but managers, coaches, colleagues or consultants can readily facilitate this training activity.
