Residential development programmes can range from an overnight stay at the hotel where a course will be held to the full indoor/outdoor development experience at a remote location which might include hill climbs, orienteering and outdoor management exercises. As the cost of this type of development will certainly be higher than standard training courses, if only because of the cost of accommodation, it’s important to be sure that the development that’s on offer is exactly what you need. It’s also crucial to think about the Health and Safety issues involved. Even with all the necessary precautions in place, accidents will still sometimes happen and you have to be confident that you are delivering your people into the safest possible hands when recommending residential training courses.

You begin the training activity by introducing the topic of residential development centres and elicit ideas on what this term includes. You then run a pairs exercise where the participants come up with the potential benefits and potential disadvantages of residential development programmes. You explain the critical importance of carefully checking all details of the proposed residential development programme, placing great importance on the Health and Safety aspects. You run a group exercise which enables participants to develop a range of questions they need to ask to ensure that all points are covered. This is followed by work on a case study where participants will be expected to recommend the most appropriate development option in a given set of circumstances, formally presenting their recommendations to the other participants. You close by covering the key learning points of the training activity.
