When faced with difficult and aggressive behaviour we have a variety of responses to choose from. The more confident we feel using those particular responses, the more likely we are able to deal effectively with difficult and/or aggressive behaviour. This training activity introduces skills for responding and provides an opportunity for the participants to practise them.

You introduce the purpose of the training activity; the participants then work in small groups to consider what challenging is, and is not, and start to identify a process for challenging. They practise using the process in a three-way skills practice exercise. Observers give feedback to the participants on how effectively they use the process and their skills.

Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers as one effective way to respond to difficult and aggressive behaviour can be to challenge it. Participants consider what challenging is, and is not, and then move on to practise the skills.

Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers in a programme on dealing with difficult and aggressive behaviour. Ideally, you will use it when the participants have had time to get to know each other and are familiar with ‘Phases of an incident’, and have considered, ‘Non-verbal behaviour’. This training activity can also be used on customer care, or negotiating skills programmes. With minor adaptations, you can use it on a ‘skills for managers’ programme.
