Why do you go to work? Why do any of us go to work? Is it just for the salary alone? If salary is the primary motivator; then your organisation’s competitor can offer much more money and the talented are gone! There is much debate surrounding these questions, but the emerging truth is that people don’t simply go to work for the salary alone; they go for a more ‘holistic’ experience. They want variety. They want a sense of achievement and fulfilment. There is a responsibility on all of us to ‘market’ why we think our organisation is a good place to work but, more than this, there is a responsibility on the organisation and the managers to create an inclusive and rewarding working environment. All of the activities in this resource are signposts towards this important aim: creating an organisation where people believe in what they are doing, and ‘buy into’ what the organisation is trying to achieve and how it achieves its objectives. People should be part of an organisation, where they see challenging initiatives, learning and development opportunities, and pathways within the organisation for them.

This short training activity opens with an examination of why we go to work, our expectations and the potential benefits of working. After defining ‘talent’, the training activity then focuses upon a light-hearted exercise about why the Roman army was a good employer and the benefits of ‘working’ in their ranks. Participants then consider the attractiveness of their own organisations for ‘the talented’ by undertaking a simple audit as preparation for a group discussion of the issues.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to allow participants to consider the motivation of people with high-talent potential and what they demand from their organisations.
