The assessing and selecting of applicants for interview using competency-based evidence can be subjective. We all assess information differently and we unconsciously 'weigh' the facts according to our own experiences. Competency-based selection and recruitment techniques are, however, particularly useful when considering candidates with no direct experience in the actual job. This activity allows participants to try this out, and to discuss and determine their own approach to the problem.
The basic principles of competency-based selection and recruitment are covered in this training activity. You begin by explaining to the participants the thinking behind competency-based selection and recruitment, and how this activity fits with others in the pack. The participants examine a five-point marking system for selection using competencies, and then go on to assess an applicant, using the five-point system. The differences in marking are recorded and discussed. Four other candidates are then assessed and ranked, and the cut-off point for selection agreed and discussed. The training activity closes with a discussion to review the participants' experience of the exercises and a summary of the key learning points.

Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to train managers to assess and select candidates for interview, knowing they are consistent and fair in their marking. It can also be used by those needing to acquire skills to support the development of others wanting to learn competency-based selection and recruitment skills. As this training activity raises awareness about the issues around bias and weighting in marking, it can be used to check whether those already doing the work are consistent and fair in the assessment process.
