It is essential to select the right person for your project team. A wide variety of studies of the effectiveness of the average interview have found it to have little reliability and poor validity as an accurate method of selection. Poor outcomes for projects which will result from recruiting the wrong person are numerous and invariably expensive. The main approach to resolving these problems and raising their success levels requires them to adopt a systematic approach and to treat recruitment as a sub-project of the major project goal.

You begin the training activity by leading a discussion on the lack of effectiveness of the average selection interview, and identify what steps the selector can take to ensure that they will recruit the best person for the job. The participants then take part in three interconnected exercises. These are designed to produce a checklist for use in the selection interview which will help ensure a better match between job and person. The training activity finishes with a practical selection exercise during which they have the opportunity to assess how well a candidate matches the competencies identified in the previous exercises. Participants are encouraged to fill in their learning review diary.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers as an essential part of any course covering recruiting and selecting staff for a project team. As it concerns making objective decisions on the candidates’ ability to perform the key elements of the job, it is also very relevant for any more broadly-based recruitment and selection training.
