Occasionally participants will be asked to present a one-off set-piece presentation. By their very nature, these presentations can be more challenging to give because most of the audience will have heard one given before and will, therefore, know what they are expecting from the speaker.

Start the training activity with a brief introduction to seven specific set-piece presentations and discuss the participants’ experience of them. You look at the presentations individually, with the participants, giving an outline of each set piece and some key points for consideration. Participants then have the opportunity to deliver one of the set pieces, which they select at random from one of the seven they have been discussing. You close the training activity with some words by Mark Twain about impromptu speeches and relate them to the ‘one-off’ presentations the participants have been practicing.
