Every task benefits from having clearly stated, specific objectives in order to evaluate results at its completion. Learning is no exception to this. Setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timebound) learning objectives enables success to be recognised by the individual and by others.
Participants complete a prospective learning log for this training activity and then split into small groups for a fun exercise ‘music making’. This is used to develop ideas about having clear criteria for judging success. There is a brief input on SMART objectives and the small groups then develop SMART objectives and success criteria for the ‘music making’. Individuals complete a retrospective learning log on their learning from the exercise and work in pairs to compare this with their original prospective learning log to consider their success. They continue the pairs work to think about a future learning event and complete a second prospective learning log, which includes a SMART objective and what their criteria for success will be.
Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to set specific objectives for their learning so that they can easily recognise when they have been successful.
