This training activity aims to bring out the best in the performer. Body Power provides a simple but effective opportunity for a group to break through preconceived, preset ceilings and achieve maximum performance levels which are set by the group and not the manager or trainer. This is a very powerful training activity which introduces simple coaching processes, and has the added benefit of helping a group to bond. It is an extremely positive way to begin a training day or a staff meeting where the staff’s input is required. Participants will experience the power of coaching and the absence of ‘command and control’. As a trainer, you will gain a very effective basis from which to develop further coaching skills in your participants.
You begin by introducing the idea of personal performance and self-responsibility. You refer to examples of famous sports coaches or simply state that success comes from people who know what they want to achieve and can think on their feet. The participants then take part in the power ball exercise; the results which they achieve will be used to show how performance can be improved. You ask the group to pass the ball between them and time the passing from start to finish. You encourage them to improve on each performance by asking coaching questions, by behaving enthusiastically and recording their times and ideas. Finally when world-class time is achieved, you review the process they used and capitalise on the enthusiasm and desire to succeed which was generated during the exercise.
