Teams need to organise themselves in order to solve problems and work out solutions. Effective teams are those that consider a range of approaches and ideas in solving problems. This exercise gives participants the opportunity to plan how they will deal with a problem and work out the mechanics of how they will actually execute the plan. To do so requires the use of lateral thinking.
Having chosen the purpose of the exercise, you refer to previous work the participants may have done that will be relevant to this training activity. Working in competing teams, the participants carry out the two stages of the exercise to achieve the highest score and be the winner. The participants either debrief their performance in their team and then share the learning points with the other team(s), or they discuss them all together.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to use creativity and lateral thinking more than practical skills as well as developing skills in teamwork and organising a team.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers part way through a training course with participants who have already done some work on problem solving and lateral thinking, and it is a good follow-on to ‘The clock’. It is a good exercise for the end of a day because it is lively and has an element of competition, so the participants finish the day in a positive way. Used as a straightforward teamwork exercise, it focuses on how team members work together and how they cope with a tight timescale.
