For many speakers, even very accomplished ones, the hardest speaking opportunity is the one that comes out of the blue and with little or no time for preparation. This often occurs at meetings and conferences when someone is asked for their opinion on a topic and has to gather their thoughts quickly and coherently so that they can speak winningly and persuasively. This training activity provides a foolproof method for doing just that. The four ‘eyes’ strategy provides participants with an instant, workable, flexible tool for speaking. This activity forms a natural bridge into the training activity ‘Specific set pieces’, which looks at set pieces such as introducing a keynote speaker, the vote of thanks, presenting awards, and so on.

You begin this training activity with an explanation of the four ‘eyes’ strategy. You then demonstrate how this works by giving an impromptu presentation on a subject chosen by the participants. Thus, the powerfulness of the technique is instantly demonstrated. The participants then use the technique for themselves over three short performances. After each of the first two performances, they receive personal feedback from a colleague, and then contribute to a group discussion on the ease, or otherwise, of using the four ‘eyes’ strategy. Before the third performance, they share their feedback with the whole group, so that everyone can observe particular issues for the speaker in the final performance. The whole group provides feedback after this final performance, and each participant is able to note their areas for development and/or improvement. Finally, the participants complete their personal action plan. The training activity closes with their reactions to a quotation by Thaddeus Golas.
