In this training activity, participants are required to think about what should be included in a grievance procedure and reach an understanding of what should be included at each different stage.

This is a straightforward training activity that requires participants to think about what should be included in a grievance procedure, and to draw a step-by-step diagram of the different stages. To help them to do this, they are provided with cards containing statements, some of which contain helpful information on effective grievance procedures, and others which do not. After sorting the cards into the two categories (useful and not useful), participants draw a simple diagram of a grievance procedure from the details on the useful set of cards. The participants work in groups of two to four people, and you provide each group with a full set of cards and take feedback, to ensure that each group has correctly identified the useful set of cards. From this set of cards, the groups complete a chart of an effective grievance procedure. Once the groups have drawn their diagrams, you debrief the training activity using a handout to check understanding. This case study requires very little experience or knowledge of grievance procedures, so it can be used as a short introduction to the topic.
