The learning needs analysis (LNA) interview provides the interviewee and their line manager and/or training officer with an opportunity to examine development needs and decide on the most effective forms of development. A successful LNA interview will cover four clearly defined stages. Although the interviewer is normally responsible for ensuring that the stages are covered effectively, the actions of the interviewee can add a great deal of value. During this training activity, the interviewees are encouraged to generate ideas that will enable them to make an effective contribution at each stage. This ensures that the actual interview time is as valuable as possible, making the best use of organisational resources.
You open the training activity by explaining the four key stages of the learning needs analysis interview from the point of view of the interviewer. The participants break into small groups to discuss their opinions on the system and you help them to see that, by adding value to all four stages, the interviewee can contribute significantly towards their own development. The participants then work in groups to generate methods of adding value at each stage. They feed back by means of formal presentations, including question and answer sessions. You close by taking key learning points from the participants before distributing a key learning points handout.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to help participants consider the four stages of the LNA interview and the responsibilities of the parties involved, focusing on methods to ensure that their own contribution carries maximum value.
