This training activity covers an essential topic for anyone interested in furthering their career – networks and networking. Participants are given an opportunity to examine what makes a successful networker, as well as how to plan a network using a network map. They are also given the chance to practise their networking skills.
The training activity begins with a look into the hidden job market, and a comparison between networking and dating to explore some of the basic tenets of what networking involves. Participants then consider what a network map looks like and discuss potential networks. They map their existing and required networks, including in this who they know or know of, and the closeness and importance of the relationship. Next, they test their networking skills and analyse what makes a successful networker. Finally, participants plan their next actions to use their networks through network planning.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to examine what makes a successful networker and, through network analysis and planning, decide how they will develop their own capabilities in this critical area for career success.
