The art of discovering underlying issues or problems is much harder than most people realise. It is easy to assume that managers or team leaders know what the problems are – after all, they are managing the team and seeing the problems on a day-to-day basis, but this intimacy with problems can often blind people to the real issues. This training resource is intended to ensure that you will be completely prepared and able to deal with all issues and problems as they arise.

The material is presented in a self-study format as this training activity is intended to help trainers prepare for the initial meeting with a client who has asked for help in team building. It could easily be modified and used for a team-building session with participants, in which case the checklist masters would become handout masters. The unit takes you through three key stages: the initial discussion with the client(s), a proposed series of interviews with a cross section of staff, and the proposal to the client.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to provide them with a process and the skills to conduct the initial fact-finding discussions with clients who may think they know what the problem is.
