Like everybody else, poor performers need things to aim for. But unlike everyone else, they need careful shepherding into the ownership of targets and objectives. They also need their targets set in positive terms so that they can see themselves as achieving rather than responding to criticism. This training activity introduces the concepts of positive goals for the under-performer; personal ownership of objectives, the social context which supports them and the evidence that will indicate progress.

The training activity begins by asking the participants if they ever come across a poor performer. This leads into a discussion around examples of poor performance from their own working lives. Common themes are drawn from these, which will later form the background to an objective-setting process. This process is outlined in a discussion with the participants. In groups, the participants then discuss a case study and set improvement targets for the poor performer described in the case. They then present and discuss these objectives in a plenary session. The training activity closes with the participants stating the PRIEST objectives and the reasons for using such a process for setting objectives.
