Team leaders have prime responsibility for ensuring the continued effectiveness and efficiency of their team. Coaching is an essential part of this role. The team leader has to be able to recognise when coaching is appropriate, to keep the team motivated and highly performing. This activity helps team leaders to use coaching to promote learning, using mutual respect, trust and freedom of expression to develop team excellence and keep the wheels turning to maintain high performance.

A milling exercise lets participants find out more about each other and helps build trust. Pair work and a group discussion identify when team coaching may be an appropriate intervention. Differences between team and individual coaching are discussed, before small groups use a case study to explore the skills involved in team coaching. Participants use role-play to practise, and receive feedback on, their coaching skills. The activity ends with individuals completing a learning log to audit their team coaching skills and consider their practice in the future.
