John Adair, a major influence in management and leadership development and first professor of leadership studies at the University of Surrey, produced a model of leadership in which a leader was represented by their commitment to three aspects – the task, the team and the individual. This training activity looks at two of those, the task and the team. Participants consider how they can use ‘The task/team graph’ to gauge their own performance in terms of the balance they achieve between the two.
You first introduce the participants to the concept of the task and the team as being two equal considerations for a team leader, and to the task/team graph. Next you give the participants descriptions of four team leaders and ask them to plot these leaders on the graph. This exercise produces four distinct graph areas. You then invite the participants, in groups, to consider the implications of being in one of these four areas. Finally, you give each participant a blank graph to take away at the end of the training activity, so they can build up a picture - over a period of week – where they actually operate as team leaders in terms of their commitment to the task and the team.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to examine what happens when leaders concentrate too much on either the team or the task, and shows participants where they operate predominantly on the ‘task/team graph’.
