Teamwork is partly about drawing ideas from team members and putting them together in such a way that all feel involved and that they have contributed. Teams need to organise themselves in order to solve problems and work out solutions. Effective teams consider a range of approaches and ideas from the various members to solve a problem. This exercise gives participants the opportunity to plan how they will handle a problem, work out the mechanics of how they will execute the plan and then do it. There is scope also for lateral thinking and thinking about team identity.
The training activity is explained as an opportunity for participants to think about team identity, its purpose and function, whilst carrying out a practical task. The participants then put their thoughts into practice by planning and building a ‘mobile’ that represents the team’s view of how it is seen by outsiders. The conclusions and learning from the exercise are drawn out by the participants in a team debrief, followed by a final discussion with all the participants together.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers combining problem solving, sharing of ideas/communication, planning and executing a task, giving participants the opportunity to plan how to approach a problem and work out the mechanics of how to do it.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers at an early or middle stage of a training course. It works well as a ‘closure’ activity at the end of a day because it is light-hearted and lively, and it helps stimulate thinking about team identity at any stage in a course.
