A departmental objective is what it says: an objective for the whole team to meet. It has been shown many times that the easiest way for a team to meet its objective is for the whole team to understand that objective fully, and for all team members to play a part in developing a process of how to achieve it. If the whole team are fully aware of the process, any changes to it are much easier to communicate, and each person will understand more clearly. Obviously this may not be appropriate in every situation, due to confidentiality or structural changes that may affect the future of some employees, but most general business issues can be handled in this way. If a member of the team is involved or feels involved in the development of a process, they are more likely to give their full commitment to it and feel motivated to meet the goal. This training activity addresses the issue by showing that all team members must play an equal part in the development of a process to achieve the desired outcome successfully.

As a team, participants plan how they will construct a replica of a house using only minimum resources. Each person must play an equal part in the planning and the construction in order for each part of the house to fit together so that it will stand alone.
