Teams go through recognisable stages of development, not necessarily in a linear fashion; a new team is formed with each new arrival or departure. A team's ability to know the stages and to recognise which stage they are at will help positive growth and development through the stages. Talk of work/life balance for individuals is common; there is less talk of a team's team/life balance. To what extent is the team so task focused that any team life outside task completion is impossible, and to what extent is such a situation sustainable?
The activity starts with a lively exercise where people identify the key characteristics of the stages of human development and highlight those that are relevant to the stages of team development. Following your introduction to the purpose of the activity, participants individually plot the stages of their own team's development over the past nine months. The activity continues with the development of a continuum that describes the extremes of team/life balance; participants then move on to work in small groups to develop questions that they can use, individually or with their team, to assess their team's team/life balance. These questions are shared in the whole group; the completion of a learning log and consideration of how to use the resources with teams and individuals complete the activity.
