Training and development must be flexible enough to meet the needs of individuals and organisations who are themselves dealing with constant change, often triggered in no small part by the rapid technological advances that have transformed the business world in recent years. Technology-based training (TBT) offers amazing levels of flexibility, eliminating the trainer’s eternal problem of getting enough people released at the same time to make a course viable by allowing learners to use the TBT material at a time and place that suits them. The use of TBT brings its own potential problems; the temptation to ignore the necessity of pre-training objective setting discussions and post- training debriefing sessions can be even greater in these circumstances than in the more traditional training situations. This training activity explores what’s available, examines the benefits and helps participants decide how to avoid the pitfalls.
You begin this training activity by introducing the topic of TBT and then run an exercise to identify TBT methods. The participants then work in small groups to prepare, and deliver, presentations on the advantages and potential disadvantages of TBT methods. You emphasise the importance of involving the department in your enquiries and decisions at early stage before encouraging the participants think about how they can find out more about is available in the field of TBT. The participants then develop checklists which enable them to check out TBT resources and suppliers in an objective manner. You close by taking key learning points from the participants before distributing a key learning points handout and commenting where appropriate.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to explore what is available and consider how best to put TBT training into action.
