Many advanced presenters tend to over-rely on presentation software, such as PowerPoint®, and get lost in the technology. They often use it badly and/or don’t know how to operate the software’s more useful features. We have seen presentations take place with the presenter using more than 50 completely different slides for a one-hour session. This is not a presentation, it’s a movie. This training activity helps participants to review their use of presentation software. It is linked to ‘Terrific technology follow-up’, where participants have the opportunity to put their learning into practice. Only use this training activity if you are working with presenters who commonly use PowerPoint® or similar software when giving presentations, and who may not properly understand how to use it effectively.

You begin by explaining to the participants the aim of this training activity, the first of two that concern the use of technology in presentations. The participants then deliver their prepared presentations. The whole group observe these, then discuss and analyse them. You follow this with tips and guidelines on managing slide shows, with appropriate examples from your own slide show. Finally, the participants reflect on what they have learned, in order to apply it in ‘Terrific technology follow-up’. The training activity closes with a reminder of the date and content of the follow-up session. You invite the participants to stay behind after the activity and have hands-on experience of the equipment.
