This training activity introduces the main parts of the CPD process and gives participants an overview of the more detailed CPD learning activities that follow.

You introduce the CPD process by talking about the underlying principle of learning how to learn continuously throughout life so as to be equipped to confront and manage threatening changes. You then describe the six stages of CPD (they are all addressed in detail in the activities from ‘Continuing Professional Development’): decide where you are now and what learning assets you have (detailed in ‘Auditing Your Assets’); set learning objectives to determine where you want to be (detailed in ‘Set Your Objectives’); plan the learning route to exploit all opportunities (detailed in ‘Plan Your Route’); fit learning methods to your own preferred learning style (detailed in ‘Learn In Your Own Way’); keep valid records so that you can demonstrate what you have learnt (detailed in ‘Record to Prove It’); keep learning actively (detailed in all activities in ‘Continuing Professional Development, particularly activities ‘So What Will You Do?’ and ‘Where Do We Go From Here?’). Participants then work together in mutual mentoring pairs to determine and record what they have already done, where they now are in the CPD process and what they need to do next. The training activity ends with a brief discussion in the full group of the points which have emerged in the pair discussions.

Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to give participants an overview of the CPD process which allows them to explore and question, and provides a route map and structure for the remaining CPD activities. Participants work out where they are in the process and arrive at their outline plans. Like the other ‘Continuing Professional Development’ activities, this one also gives participants some practice in mutual mentoring.
