Even the most confident of people can be apprehensive when faced with the promotion/selection interview. For some, their nervousness or relative lack of experience in the role of interviewee can seriously affect their ability to present themselves in the most favourable light. This also means that the organisation may overlook someone who may be perfect for the role. This two-stage training activity aims to give participants the opportunity to take part in an interview role play that is, in every way possible, a genuine interview. The participants then have a unique opportunity to assess their own performance and receive valuable feedback from others.

This training activity runs in two distinct stages. Read through the training activity to decide how and when you want to run the first stage. Stage 1: You can either send all necessary instructions and handouts to the participants to complete individually prior to attending stage 2 or you run stage 1 as a normal training session. If you choose to take the latter course of action, you open by explaining that the participants’ task during this training activity is to select a job they would like to apply for from amongst a range supplied, to compile a CV (or complete and application form) with that particular role in mind, and to prepare to take part in an actual selection interview. You coach where needed throughout the exercise. Stage 2 (it is unlikely that stage 2 will immediately follow stage 1): You facilitate recorded interviews, working with only two participants at a time and involving a fully competent selection interviewer. Each interview is followed by detailed feedback. You close the training activity with a brief discussion on the value of the live interview experience.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to take part in selection interview role plays, giving them the opportunity to practise their interviewee skills and receive valuable feedback before going live in the role of interviewee.
