Sculpture can be a powerful medium for increasing understanding about how teams work and the interrelationships that may help of hinder team learning and development. These can give clear pictures of how team members make judgements about each other and give valuable feedback between members. This activity gives team leaders the opportunity to use sculpture, to consider how this might help in understanding their own team's dynamics and how the whole team can work better together.
The group is divided into small teams and each one has fun making dough and producing a sculpture of each team member. Individuals reflect and make notes on what happened. They then take turns to set up and discuss sculptured scenes to show their perception of what team dynamics were happening during the dough-making exercise. Pairs or trios explore deeper into what dynamics were operating and then the teams complete questionnaires about what helped achieve the task and what helped the group work together. In the short plenary session the full group discuss what affects group learning. The activity closes with a brief discussion about using team members themselves to form a sculpture, and participants then individually complete a learning log about the application to their own work teams.
