The ability to see a situation form another’s point of view as well as from your own increases your perception considerably. If you can also step back and take an objective, detached view, it is an even greater asset and facilitates balanced judgement. This training activity demonstrates a technique whereby all three of these perceptions can be accessed easily to gain a broader viewpoint.
Participants work in pairs, taking it in turns to re-run an incident from the past where the outcome was not wholly satisfactory. They discuss their results and then repeat the exercise to rehearse a future situation. Finally, the whole group reconvenes to discuss their experiences and share any interesting or surprising insights they have gained.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to show participants how to broaden their viewpoints and thereby defuse potentially confrontational situations. It is a powerful tool for enhancing assertiveness and improving negotiation skills by allowing a ‘communication rehearsal’ to take place.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers with participants at all levels. This training activity is an extremely valuable communication too. It can successfully defuse potentially confrontational situations by broadening the perspective available to the individual. Other people’s behaviour can be accurately anticipated and planned for and it is, therefore, appropriate for anyone in a selling, negotiating or counselling role. It is also a very powerful tool for enhancing assertiveness and improving interview skills by allowing a ‘communication rehearsal’ to take place. This is particularly relevant for anyone who manages, supervises or leads others.
