As the saying goes, ‘No pain, no gain!’ Sometimes it is necessary to recognise that we must invest some of our precious time now to provide the information that will save us time in the future. It is very important to gather the information accurately so that we can maximise future returns. The only real way to do this is to complete a timelog. This training activity demonstrates the positive aspects of doing so by helping the participants understand the benefits and helping them design a timelog which is relevant to them.

You begin this training activity by evaluating with the participants the positive and negative aspects of completing a timelog. You then coach them on how the timelog works and involve them in adapting it to take into account the key tasks relevant to them. You end the session by assuring the group of the value and effectiveness of completing their individual timelogs, explaining that the information they gather will be analysed in the next session.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to create a timelog that really works.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers in conjunction with the training activity ‘Analysis of the timelog’, to ensure that the information the participants obtain is analysed and turned into meaningful action points. If possible, hold this activity about 6–10 working days before following it up with ‘Analysis of the timelog’. This is because it will give you the opportunity to emphasise the importance of completing the timelog fully and accurately, to gain the group’s commitment and to check their understanding.
