Both individuals and groups can undertake this activity. Performance management is about: 1. appraising past performance; 2. reflecting on whether objectives have been met; 3. understanding why; 4. setting and agreeing new objectives for the year ahead; 5. identifying training and development needs where assessed competency levels are weak or new skills are required. Having completed steps one to four of the process, it is often the training needs analysis which is not carried out. This activity gives participants an easy to use, practical way of carrying out a training needs analysis that is adaptable and involves both staff and teams in the analysis.
This activity is in five stages. You first explain to the participants how a training needs analysis fits into the strategic business plans of the organisation. Next, they examine how a simple self-assessed training needs analysis is formed. In the third stage the participants look at how adding a manager's assessment to a self-assessment changes the assessment matrix. They include the needs of the job and then see how the matrix relates to the workplace. The fourth stage is a training needs analysis exercise the particpants carry out in groups and present their findings in a final feedback session. The activity closes with a summary of the advantages and benefits of a competency -based training needs assessment.
