This training activity can be used as part of any team-building or management development training event. This training activity needs more space and more equipment and is generally more ‘physical’. It could be run very successfully as part of a residential programme.
You start by explaining that the purpose of this training activity is to explore the issue of trust in the team leader and to realise the importance of trust in the team-building process. After selecting a group member to act as team leader for the exercise, you brief them on their task, which is to lead the blindfolded group around a marked-off area containing obstacles. With the team, they need to devise a communication system to use during the exercise and to brief the team before commencing. Each team member will progress individually around the ‘course’ in a given time. In the debrief, you explore the experiences of both the leader and the participants, and then look at the importance of trust in teams at work.
