Unhelpful messages - breaking the pattern

Many of use carry unhelpful (I should/should not) messages in our heads, usually learned in childhood, that prevent us from being fully effective. This training activity is an opportunity to explore and reframe some of these messages, and to help participants remain effective when faced with difficult and challenging behaviour.

You introduce the purpose of this training activity. The participants then work in small groups, to comment on, challenge and reframe given unhelpful statements. The training activity ends with presentations of the reframed statements and a discussion on reframing.

Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers in any programme on dealing with difficult and aggressive behaviour, once the introductory and initial activities have been completed. It is a short activity and quite lively, so can be used as an energiser to provide a change of pace. It can also be used in a programme on conflict resolution, negotiating skills, or personal development.
