Even the most experienced presenters need to review their presentation style on a regular basis if their presentations are to remain inspiring and interesting. Whatever the subject matter they are delivering, a presenter must take account of the impact they are having upon their audience, both verbally and non-verbally. This training activity considers the effect they make with their voice. In other words, ‘It’s not what you say; it’s the way that you say it’.

You introduce the training activity as an opportunity for participants to explore their voice, which is not something they are probably used to doing. They do this, firstly, by exploring in a series of exercises all aspects of how the voice works. They go on to discover what they like and dislike about their voice. You actively encourage positive comparisons to help develop their own personal style and build their self-confidence as a presenter. Finally, the participants consider feedback about their voice from others. You encourage them to ask for and benefit from regular feedback about their vocal work in presentations. You close the training activity with a brief review of what the participants have learned about their own voice, how the voice works, and why such knowledge is important when they are presenting.
