The best way of improving attendance is to create a working environment where people want to come to work. This training activity is designed to help participants improve the culture of their organisations so that there is a positive attendance culture.

You begin this training activity with a brief introduction to the subject of creating a positive attendance culture, before asking the participants to work in groups to list their ideas on why people do or do not come to work. Next, you discuss their suggestions and then lead a plenary session on theories of motivation, in particular motivators and de-motivators. The participants again work in groups to identify examples in their own organisations. You then lead a further plenary session linking motivators and de-motivators to attendance management and the creation of a positive attendance culture. Finally, you summarise the training activity, drawing together the key points and answering any questions the participants raise.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers with line managers or HR staff as a stand-alone training activity or as part of an attendance management programme. It will work particularly well if combined with ’Corporate culture’, which should ideally precede this training activity, unless participants are well versed in what constitutes a corporate culture.
