What are the key essentials of management and how do you rate your standing as a manager?
The training activity opens with a discussion in which the participants identify the ingredients and agree a definition of ‘management’. You then lead a discussion on each of the key activities that a typical manager will have to master in order to deliver the expected results. The participants then complete a questionnaire which identifies the importance to their job, and their degree of competence in each, of 20 key activities of management. Participants choose two activities for further discussion. You then facilitate a group exercise during which each participant discusses and receives feedback on their personal strengths and weaknesses as managers. The training activity ends with a plenary review during which participants report back on their action plans for continued development as managers.

Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to help participants develop plans for their self-development. It is equally applicable at the start of a training programme, when it will focus the participants on what they need to learn from the coming event, and at the conclusion of a course when participants are preparing action plans for their return to work. The training activity can be used as a foundation session on a wide variety of learning events, for example, building and leading a team, career planning and development, introduction to management, performance appraisal, or time management.
