Take two people, put them under the same pressure and they will respond differently. Why? Because they ‘see’ the pressure in a different way. And because their perceptions of the situation are different, their responses will be different. One response may result in stress, the other may not. Learning to respond to pressure in different ways by ‘seeing’ them from a different perspective is one of the key skills of successful stress management.

This training activity begins with the participants, working together as one group, comparing perceptions of situations and then exploring the link between perceptions, reactions and stress. Through questions and discussions, they go on to establish that perceptions are chosen. Working in groups of four or five they consolidate this theory in an exercise in which they choose perspectives that will result either in increasing or reducing pressure. In a plenary session, they then discuss how the ability to change perspectives can be used to reduce pressure at work. Finally, they examine putting the theory into practice.

Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to help participants to understand that their perception of a situation is directly related to the stress it generates. This activity gives practical experience in altering perceptions.
